~Free Bib Pattern~

My sewing of late has been the kind brought on by necessity fixing holes in pants, adding sleeves, making bibs for the babe and that sort of thing. I was going to make my own bib pattern and share for everyone to use but have you looked around for a bib pattern lately? They are everywhere. Everywhere! I found one that I really liked the look of and made one to see if it was really as good as the one in my head. It was, so I proceeded to make 3 more.

The pattern is here. There is a laminated version and a reversible one but I kind of combined the two for my reversible bib with a front pocket. I am in love with this pattern! It was easy and fits perfect.

Parker actually likes it too, which is kind of a miracle for any bib. I made the toddler size since he is in a size 12 months and as you can see the bib fits great. I'm really glad I found this pattern as most I have found didn't include a pocket (which I could have added easily enough but now I don't have to) or they were the kind where I had to sign up for something or were just too small. This pattern had it all for free and was easy, my two favorite things!

PS. I bought this pattern a year or so ago and was pleasantly surprised to find that it now goes up to a size 12 years! I am so excited that they upped the sizing on not just this pattern but all of them. I emailed the shop and they happily sent me an update with the larger sizing, at no cost!

After finding this out I signed up as an affiliate (which means I get a small commission for any pattern bought through this blog) and bought a pattern. I used to love their patterns but they only went up to a size 8 so I kind of mentally crossed it off my list when Broc grew out of that size. I am excited that now their patterns will last much longer for all my boys to wear :0)

Free Patterns for boys

I am so, So, SO excited to share this! On my Free patterns for boys tab I been been working for a long time to make all the text into images and finally, finally I am done! They are categorized by size and now you can see a small image of it before going to the site that hosts the pattern. I still have some work to do but I am beyond thrilled to share this with others, heck I use this more than anyone so I'm glad for me!

There are more than a hundred patterns listed here and I have a few for Men as well, since they are hard to find, I like to have them on hand for myself ;0)
As always these patterns are actual patterns you can print (with only 1 or 2 exceptions) I love me a good tutorial but sometimes I just want a pattern with the size already there and not something I need to measure out. Go check it out and enjoy! Its just in time before the next kids clothes week challenge (April 20-26) so you can plan and print all you need for a summer wardrobe for your boy!

18" Doll blanket and food

You remember my niece I made the Dresses for? Well June just had a birthday and since I was itching to make some doll stuff I decided that she really needed a blanket for her American girl doll.

And when you make a doll blanket you obviously need to make a pillow, a new skirt and then the dolly will need a snack, right? Right. My ten minute project turned into a few days worth of ten minute projects but I didn't mind :0)

The quilt is tiny, tiny scraps that I pieced together, added a backing (with extra for self binding) and free motioned it all together. The pillow is a simple square stuffed and hand stitched.

A doll skirt is the easiest thing to make. Really I promise! I used a simple rectangle hemmed on one side and added elastic by stretching while sewing a zigzag stitch and bam, done!

The food was hand stitched and the patterns were inspired from several around the web but made up by me.
June was so, so excited to get them and she gave me a great, great big hug! It was the best thing ever :0) She'll definitely be getting more dolly stuff from this Aunt! ;0)

Pre-teen shirt tips

When making Broc’s shirt I was a bit overwhelmed at trying to make a shirt that didn’t look too homemade or silly for a boy who is almost 10 (next month ack!). He wanted to use the car so we tried the wheel treads dipped in paint and rolled it a few times on the shirt. It turned pretty good! I thought adding a few to the elbows would make a mock patch look and I think it worked quite well. We also used a pencil gripper in a triangle shape dotted all over. both methods worked well.

My sewing for this one is going to have to grow up a bit since he is getting into the preteen sizes for sewing. He is in a 12 in length and will most likely be longer than that pretty soon and most boy patterns do not go that large, unfortunately. He is thin so I think just by adding length we will still be good for the time being. I am planning on taking a class on Craftsy for grading a pattern up or down a couple sizes and that will be a good thing with this boy ;0) I’ll be taking it soon and I’ll be sure to let you all know what I think about it!

I learned a few things painting these shirts:
1. Anything can be used for painting shirts and the more creative you are the better they turn out.
2. Less is better at first. The more we added the younger the shirt looked.
3. Cool textures make less on the shirt seem like more. It also adds a design element older boys like.

By the way did I mention I am now an affiliate for Craftsy? That means that I will be posting some things for them, rating some of their patterns and anything you click on or buy through my blog will help support this blog!

A Monster named Drem....

After all the cutesy painting On Saturday I wanted to tell the story of how a monster named Drem was born.

I have to admit this shirt was a pain to make largely because I wanted my boys to be involved in the making process. Frist I got them already to paint only to have them cry about not being able to watch a movie, and then they started painting without my help (the nerve!).

While painting this particular shirt I was going for the phrase “Dreamer” and my poor 9 year-old pointed out that I had indeed forgotten to paint an “A” so the shirt now read “Dremer”, ugh. To finish off this joyful time Broc tipped the white paint All Over the shirt!

I was quite upset but I am proud to report that I did not yell or get too mad. I went really quiet and Broc said “I’m sorry mom” and wisely left the room. I sat there fuming for a while and was ready to throw the shirt away when I thought “Why not turn the huge white spot into a monster and cover up part of my misspelled word?” And that is how a Monster named “Drem” was born.

Preston really loves this shirt and Drem is a monster that really captures his personality. Wildly cute, serious and crazy all rolled together. They really complement each other well, don’t you think?

Painting shirts

Last Saturday I decided it was high time to paint the boys Valentines shirts, ya know now that St. Patrick’s day and Easter are just around the corner ;0)

A tip to anyone with kids, make them wear old clothes or just have them paint without a shirt on, ok? It will save a huge headache later, I promise!

The boys and I searched all over the house for appropriate painting supplies and came up with a car for the
wheel treads, bubble wrap and a pencil grippy in the shape of a triangle. They all worked excellent!

I did some paint on the elbows of a couple of the shirt too for an elbow patch look and I think it worked famously!

A blow dryer to quicken up the drying process will make a project like this go much faster. Even with blow drying we weren't able to complete these until later that day. I am so excited to show you how well they turned out! Look for them next week, you'll love them!!
