Grils in pink

My sis in law sent me some pictures of the girls in their dresses and I just wanted to post them up for you guys to see! And to brag a bit about how stinking cute my nieces are ;0) I mean really Daisy's baby cheeks are delicious! June is the sweetest girl and if you follow me on instagram (@seemesew) you would have saw us playing dolls together, it was way fun!

You can see this dress on Jun is a bit baggier than her Christmas dress but it still looks great and the fit really isn't bad... I'm just super duper picky.

This sweet baby has the longest and prettiest lashes she looks like a perfect doll! She is like a dream baby too and rarely cries, well not that I've heard anyways, momma might say something different ;0)

Dresses in pink

Here are the other two dresses I made for my nieces!
I used the little geranium for Daisy and I love it! The dress turned out so cute on her, I wish I had some pictures to share but I didn't manage to get any :0( Oh and that little blurry spot was from a smudge on my lens I didn't realize was there until way to late.

The little geranium doesn't come with a sleeve option since its a free pattern but I found out that the modern baby doll top sleeve worked perfect when I shrunk it down to 72%. I did add an inch in the sleeve length but otherwise it fit like it was made for it!

I didn't change anything on this dress except to lengthen it a bit and I used a 1/4" seam allowance instead of 3/8" and it fit her perfectly! She was in about 3-6 months in store bought for reference.

For June I again used the Modern Babydoll top and I really love the fit!

 Pardon the smudge again!
I didn't do a zipper like it called for, I added 1" in the sleeve, added 2" to the bodice and lengthened the skirt, hmmm that was more changes than I realized, lol! Otherwise I did everything basically like the pattern called for. I think I should have used the 1/2" seam allowance because the fit wasn't as perfect as I would have liked but Boston said it fit great so maybe its just me being super picky.
It was so fun to sew these up!
What patterns would you use for a girl if you could?

When someone you know struggles with depression

This last year has been a doosey! I had a baby, my fourth boy and some pretty serious medical issues after having him that took a few months to recover from, my Dad was diagnosed with cancer and passed away. Any one of those things is difficult to deal with and would cause someone some amount of depression and I already struggle with depression on top dealing with that. I feel that I've found some things that others can do to help someone they know who is dealing with depression.

Depression. Its an interesting word isn't it? I mean it really makes anyone uncomfortable when some one says "I struggle with depression" or "I've been really depressed lately" and the first thing they usually say to try and lighten the mood is "I know just what mean!"  and go on about a time when they had a week or two of feeling sad. I'm sure what they are saying is a real feeling to them but to someone who is really struggling with major depression that can make them feel even more isolated since they haven't felt this way for a few days or a month. Most likely they have been struggling with depression for years and when someone says something that diminishes what they are going through it makes them feel even worse, because obviously they must be the only ones who feel the true meaning of depression, which is a very lonely and isolating place to be.

Depression is a place that is not fun or happy or where anyone would willingly go and yet 1 in 10 adults struggle with it! Wikipedia says this about a person with a major depressive disorder "A person having a major depressive episode usually exhibits a very low mood, which pervades all aspects of life, and an inability to experience pleasure in activities that were formerly enjoyed." Its a feeling of complete apathy that you simply can't care or enjoy the things you desperately want too! No matter how hard you try you can't make yourself feel better or cure yourself or you would.

I've been there. I've struggled off and on with depression over the years and it is not a fun, good or friendly place to be. Everyone struggles with it differently. Anxiety is one of my first symptoms and it tends to just get worse. I get near suicidal when asked to speak in front of crowds or if I'm in a situation where there's too much pressure. I also have very little patience with my loved ones (ironically) and anger is my first defense in that state of mind. I have no drive to do anything that I used to enjoy and I wonder what life has to offer me when there is no escape from the darkness I feel.
Why am I sharing these personal things with you? Well Over the years I have tried many things to help myself, prescriptions, counseling, over the counter drugs, herbs, diet, self help books, increased religious efforts and even essential oils. Everything has helped a little for a short period but nothing has "cured" me. My purpose is to help those who know someone who is struggling with depression.

The first thing to do is nothing. I know, I know that seems counterproductive but the last thing someone who is really struggling needs is someone getting in their space and showing them everything they should be doing; if they were capable of doing it they would.

The Second thing is to listen. Let them complain, talk about their dreams, their worries (which may be many) and anything they want to talk about. Don't judge or fix anything just listen.

Talk to them. Chat with them about normal stuff that isn't to heavy or deep and without expectations. Sometimes just chatting with a friend about trivial things is helpful.

Invite them places or to do something. Note: I said invite them but please don't put pressure on them to come with you or do an activity; in other words an invitation without expectation. Inviting helps them to know you care and letting them know its ok if they don't feel like they can, is even better.

Visit them or drop something off.  A little visit can do wonders for someone who is struggling! If you don't have time for a full visit then drop something off like flowers, candy, a card, something homemade, a meal, anything to show you've been thinking of them and care.

Offer specific help. If they have small children offer a specific day and time to watch their kids, pet watching or walking, bring them dinner one night or lunch. Note: just offering help with no follow up is useless because likely they won't call if they needed it.

The last thing is to have patience. Being a committed friend or family member is going to require patience and realizing that this could last for months or longer. Be there for them but be patient; it is going to take time for them to feel better and truthfully they might always struggle to some extent so be mindful of that when they start to act different.

Depression is a hard thing to watch someone go through. I hope that this list will help you help someone else!

*WARNING* If you suspect someone is going to commit suicide or hurt themselves then take them immediately to the emergency room! I had someone I cared for who was getting suicidal so I said "we're going to the doctor" He wasn't too happy but I took him anyways. There I found out that he was worse than I realized. They said to just take him to the ER if it ever happened again because they are equipped for emergencies like that. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

I am not a doctor or a therapist so my advise is not to replace what a current caregiver is saying, its just my experience.

Dresses for 2

After this dress I made for Daisy my sister in-law, Boston, asked me to make a few more. I was more than happy to since I rarely get that opportunity and she was nice enough to pay me too :0)

I think they turned out great and I am beyond excited at how well they turned out! Especially since I didn't get to try them on while making them and I made quite a few changes to the pattern I used.

If I ever had girls I would want them to be like these two <3 They are the epitome of perfect little girls and are the cutest things ever!

The fabric for both dresses was bought at Joannes but here are similar fabrics (affiliate links) here, here, here.
The buttons I used are from my grandma but here are some that look good with the fabric (affiliate links) the first link is very similar to the ones I used here, here, here.

So For Daisy's dress I used Rae's little geranium dress. I didn't make any changes to this dress and I LOVE it so hard!
The buttons turned out to be a happy mistake! I accidentally made the buttonholes a smidge too small so the ones Boston had for the dress didn't fit but I did have these vintage green ones and I instantly knew it was meant to be. The gold on the edges and the way it fits together is perfect, I love it when things happen like that!
Daisy's dress fit perfect after I did a 1/4" seam instead of the 3/8" the pattern called for. I was worried it wouldn't fit since shes grown since the last dress I made her measurements said it would fit but to be safe I decreased the seam allowance and I think it worked out well!

For Junes dress I used the Modern Babydoll top from Shwin designs its a free pattern and was just the right size for June. I love the classic look to a babydoll dress but I did make quite a few changes.

First I lengthened the bodice about 1.5 inches since I wanted it to fit a little lower than the original. I also increased the seam allowance to 1/2" instead of 3/8" since Junes Chest measured 23" instead of 24".
The sleeves I drafted from the original pattern but I changed the depth, length and width for a puffier fit. I also added a band on the hem to bring in more gathers and give it a more fitted look.

I also added 1" to each back piece so I could use buttons instead of a zipper. I also increased the skirt length. Junes dress shoulder to hem I wanted to be at least 26" long I ended up doing it about 1" longer than for growing room.
Overall I'm happy with the dresses and of the ones I made for them these two are my favorite!
After making them I realized I really have a lot to learn about dresses I need more practice I guess ;0)

Holiday Quilt

A few weeks ago I made this quilt and after seeing it my Mom asked to purchase it. I'm really glad she did since this is the quilt my Dad used up until his death last week. It will always be a reminder of those sweet last days with him, caring for him and enjoying his presence as long as I could.

I didn't follow a pattern or anything its purely my imagination ;0) I have gotten where I am starting to enjoy piecing quilts more than I used to and I think I'll be making a few more this year. the part that is still not as enjoyable is the binding and actual quilting of the quilt. I think as I get more practice I'll enoy it more but I'm still very much a beginner!

I absolutely love the quilt lines on the back! Its far from perfect but I love the charm of imperfection. I couldn't decide if I should do a white backing or not but I'm SO glad I did it really makes the binding Pop and is very classic looking.

I purchased a holiday charm pack quite awhile ago and this one is, sadly, no longer available. Amazon does have some that are similar in coloring or ones I think are just pretty (affiliate links) here, here and here.

The binding is my favorite part (it was also the most infuriating as nothing went right while sewing it on) I love the stitch I used its so pretty and much better than a simple straight stitch.
Now that my Dad used and loved this quilt I  kinda want it back ;0) but I'll enjoy going to my mom's and seeing there knowing it comforted him in his last days.
Thank you everyone for your sweet comments/emails about my Dad when I posted earlier what we were dealing with! It was much appreciated.

2014 year end review

Here are my projects for the year, I know I have some that are not blogged yet and also a few I never did blog so this list is more of a glimpse of what I did, lol! I didn't learn too many new things with having a new baby and taking care of my Dad but I enjoyed what I did do so that's what really matters :o)

This new year I am hoping to take things up a notch and learn more about zippers and a little more about quilting. Simple plans but I work better with simple and doing more if I want to. I hope you all have a great New Years!
